Last month we were over the moon to be selected as finalist for the 2017 Young Innovator Awards (YIA). YIA is a Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty competition in which students between year 7 and 13 submit their innovative ideas aimed at solving a problem, thus making the world a better place.
This year there was a ground breaking 505 entries! The ideas showcased this year were extremely innovative and we feel honoured to be among these bright young minds. Judges for this year's YIA, included Wade flangagan (inovation developer for Nike), Sinead O'Sullivan (ex-NASA scientist), Catherine Harris (Brand Inovation Guru) and Lydia Gilmore (ex Tauranga Girls' College Pupil and 2016 Senior Supreme Winner).
As finalists, we were given the amazing opportunity to attend a Nike Inovation workshop on the 8th August hosted by Wade Flanagan. We learnt all about the creative process Nike goes through when developing their cutting edge products, and even had a go ourselves, at designing inovative foot wear for various New Zealand sporting teams.
Then on the 10th August we attended the YIA Award night. We had a great time celebrating inovation in the Bay of Plenty. We were awarded Supreme Senior Winner! We have won $2000 cash which will go towards further developing the iBrite as well as a $10,000 internship to progress our product development and branding.
We are so thankful to YIA for this oppertunity as well as YIA's sponsors (Beca, BayFair, Page Macrae Engineering and Plus Group) and partners (Blue Lab, Woods Creative and Priority 1).
